Health Nurse

Public health nurses are registered nurses who work to prevent disease, promote health and wellbeing. Our public health nurses work with tamariki/children in primary and intermediate schools providing a free health service.

Most schools have an allocated public health nurse who makes regular visits to the school; providing support, advice and referrals on health matters. This includes assistance with:

  • Health advice
  • Skin conditions
  • Breathing problems
  • Behavioural and developmental concerns
  • Wetting and soiling
  • Vision and hearing concerns
  • Mental health
  • Child protection
  • Absenteeism related to a health concern
  • Referrals to specialist services

We work closely with schools as well as visiting families and whānau in their homes for follow up and helping them access the support they need.

Your public health nurse can be contacted through the school office.
